Cutting Captured Video - 3

The Cutting stage

For this, you open the editor and load the capture file. The settings for the editor should be the same as those used to capture the file. I keep a special project that I call cutting with the options correctly set. If your editor supports templates, you can create a suitable one, then use that to open a new throwaway project.

Make sure the file is fully to the left in the timeline, so there is no blank space at the start of the project

You now need to set the mark-in and mark-out points to the start and end of the first shot. There are several ways to do this, as you'll be aware if you are an MSP user. The method I find easiest is to use the scratch-pad. (In MSP 6 use the Source window)

Double-click the imported file to open the scratchpad. Run the clip forward using the play button or the shuttle wheel until you get to the first shot. Then use the shuttle and frame back and forward buttons to position on the first good frame. I say "good frame" because not all cameras make completely clean cuts between shots, and the first one or two actual frames may be a bit iffy.

Press mark-in at this point, then run the clip forward to the end of the shot. Now position on the first frame of the next shot and press mark-out. The timeline now contains exactly that one camera shot.
