London 1891 Census Project

A BRIEF HISTORY AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The Free Census Project aims to transcribe ALL the UK 19th Century census returns in order to create an online 'free to view' database. Freecen was started about three years ago with a pilot project for the 1891 census returns for Devon and is part of FreeUKGen, a sister project to FreeBMD and FreeReg. So all three of the UK primary sources for the family historian will be online and free to view.

The St Pancras District was originally started by Canadian Matthew Miller shortly followed by Michael McCormick who is also coordinator for Cornwall and Warwickshire. Michael's contribution to the St Pancras Project has been immense and much appreciated by Linda Jones who has recently taken over the project and who has 'Jones' ancestors in the area.

Barbara Clay is the coordinator for Whitechapel, St George in the East, Stepney and Mile End. She is herself a Londoner by birth and though she no longer lives there she still has family who do. She volunteered to transcribe in the autumn of 2001 and was immediately asked to become a coordinator for a part of London.

Giles McNeill who lives in California is the coordinator for Westminster, Marylebone, Hanover Square, St Giles and Strand.

Direct access to any of the three coordinators above can be made via their respective status pages.
