Although it appears that Nancy was uncertain where she was born (Lancashire, Winwick or Culcheth) in the early census only the county was required, Culcheth was in Lancashire in those days although since the boundary changes in the 1960's it is in Cheshire. The reference to Winwick would have been the parish at that time, Culcheth and Croft (Where I live) were not much more than hamlets and came under the parish control of Winwick.
At the time of the 1871 Census Edward
and Ann (Whitfield) were living at 44 Aikin St, Warrington and already had two
children John and William.
The 1881 Census shows Edward (Glass Maker) and Ann living at 7 Aikin St, Warrington,
now with six children (the only one missing is my Grand Father James Whitfield
Kenwright who was born the following year.
Ellen by 1881 had married William Gallop and at the time of the Census was living at 28 School Brow, Warrington with 3 year old daughter Bether and 3 month old son Richard. It does appear however that they also had a 6 year old Daughter Fanny who at the time of the census was staying with John and Nancy.
John and Nancy's son John (also a
glass maker) appears on the 1841 and 1851 census living with his parents but
by 1861 had married Alice (Wells?) and was living at 25 Orford Lane, Warrington
with Son William 3 and 1 year old Daughter Elizabeth
By 1871 they had moved to 65 Baxter St, Warrington and had another 4 children
(between then and the 1881 census they had a further 3)
1881 census shows them living at 5 Baxter St, Warrington.
Their first son William appears only on the 1861 census at the age of 3, I suspect
he died in infancy as they appear to have had another son William E in 1865.
